I love these types of girls too, but what does "emo" mean or stand / short for?

but we equate it with the genre of music, "emo" which is typically the underground alternative scene, (emotional punk) but around here, it seems as though "emo" means, any girls with tattoos or piercings, or weird colored hair, or punk looking girls. (which to me seems fairly accurate) if you go to SuicideGirls.com or GodsGirls.com you can see good examples of some emo looking girls. or just stick around here and hopefully you will see plenty in this thread. well no, the term emo never came as a shorting of 'emotional' its a common mistake because the history is a little messed up. First of all you had punk then you had hardcore you then had some hardcore bands that started to play with the emotion of songs rather than politics as such. There wasn't really a name for it but while 'emo' was banded around a bit as a joke the music tended to be called emotivehardcore (or emotional hardcore) what happened next is where it all gets rather confusing.
Lots of the 'emotivehardcore' bands started to do different things or new bands linked to them turned up. This lead down lots of different paths but the bigest one was what is really called 'emo' but what really indy emo stuff. Bands like sunny day real estate start to take the emotivehardcore stuff and play with the music more, going more tuneful and so on. This lead to kind of sound that exploded and where the (old) kind of emo kid came from. Get up kids and so on while not really the same kind of thing got taged with the 'emo' term. basicly the emo kid was rather geeky. What you then had happen is a lot of poppunk bands (which was always very close to 'emo' anyway) started to do stuff and shout a bit, bands like finch for example but ya there was a move to put some ideas of 'hardcore' back in poppunk/emo stuff. This is where the look of the 'new' emo kids comes from, mainly due to blink 182 and there clothing lines to be honset (which is amusing) but ya from there you had the shity 'scene' kids starting to show up. The people who wanted to be hardcore but really didn't know anything about it, where you get the more shouty and shity 'emo' bands from beacuse you know it can't be cool if you can spend 5 seconds listening to and enjoying it. This is where bits of the 'look' like hoods up and bandaners come from, calling back to hardcore shows where you'd not want any one to know who you where in the pit. But basicly along side this there was lots of kinds of music that go be linked back to the early 'emo' stuff so in a sense you can call a lot of alt music emo in some sense. Then you have the start of useing 'emo' to reaplce 'goth' and emo becomeing a catch all genric tearm for 'emontial' rather than any direct meaning to the music. So you have 'emo' in tearms of music and 'emo' as a slang tearm for just about everything in contemporary 'alt' fashion. The way the kids dress has far more to do with poppunk and goth or even glam rock now than anything really 'emo' which is why i like to use 'scene' or 'fashioncore' for them. but ya i'll be quite now, you have no idea how long i could go on about this because its an intresting subject. Its also very vage, no one can really work out whats happening. But basicly the 'emo' in the sense its used now is just a catch all term for the genrale alt fashion. |
