from news story:
Don’t jump the couch, K Fed. In an event that will make many podcasts, truthiness was voted to be the 2005 Word of the Year as the American Dialect Society met in Albuquerque.
Steven Colbert, former correspondent on the satire news show The Daily Show, coined the term. The society defined truthiness as “the quality of stating concepts or facts one wishes or believes to be true, rather than the concepts or facts known to be true.”
But the society didn’t just give one award. Other words won other prizes:
· Most useful: podcast, a digital feed containing audio or video files for downloading to a portable MP3 player.
· Most creative: whale tail, the appearance of thong underwear above the waistband of pants, shorts, or a skirt.
· Most unnecessary: K Fed, short for Kevin Federline, Britney Spears’ husband.
· Most euphemistic: internal nutrition, force-feeding a prisoner.
· Most likely to succeed: sudoku, a kind of number puzzle.
· Least likely to succeed: pope-squatting, registering an Internet domain name that is the same as the name a pope would choose, in order to profit from it.
· Best Tom Cruise-related word (this year’s special category): jump the couch, to exhibit strange behavior, like Cruise’s couch-jumping antics on “Oprah” and, later, “The Tonight Show.”
Previous Word of the Year winners include metrosexual (2003) and weapons of mass destruction (2002).
